Born in Belgium in 1945, John Vander arrived in Australia as a migrant.
Although he did some painting in Europe, he took up painting on a full time basis in 1976.
His work is varied and interesting often immortalising the pioneer spirit of Australia, with rural street scenes and country homesteads being of predominant interest to him.
He has won the Opera House Art Award as well as highly commended awards in various exhibitions. His work is always represented at the Royal Easter Show.
He has enjoyed 12 highly successful one-man shows and as a result he is represented in many private collections, including the First National Bank of New York, Caltex Australia, Shoalhaven at Wollongong and municipal art libraries.
